Water is an indispensable resource that is needed for growing cotton but also during the textile production process. Today, it is more important than ever for the cotton and textile industry to explore innovative ways to limit water usage. The digital talk “Cotton & Water” presents the facts behind this ongoing discussion and gives insights into new and progressive strategies as well as technical developments for a more sustainable agriculture and production.

Ed Barnes

Senior Director, Agricultural and Environmental Research Division, Cotton Incorporated

Dr. Barnes is Senior Director of Agricultural and Environmental Research at Cotton Incorporated where for the last twenty years he has managed agricultural engineering related projects, including programs on: precision farming, ginning, irrigation management, conservation tillage, and cotton harvest systems. He has also served as a team member in documenting cotton’s progress in reducing its environmental footprint while at the same time increasing productivity and currently serves on the Science Advisory Council of Field to Market, The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture.  Most recently he has been leading efforts to increase the automation of cotton production systems.

Prior to Cotton Incorporated Dr. Barnes spent seven years conducting research on crop water management with remotely sensed data for the USDA-Agricultural Research Service at the U.S. Water Conservation Laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineers (ASABE) and currently serves on their Board of Trustees.  He received his BS and MS in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from NC State University and PhD in Biosystems Engineering from Oklahoma State University.

  • For the last 16 years working for the Israel Cotton Board – classing, marketing, advisor at the cotton board extension for plant protection as well as growing.
  • Since 2015 manager of the classing and quality department of the Israel cotton board.

The Transformers’ Foundation

Andrew has worked in textile development and marketing since 1976.

Olah Inc. has grown to a prominent full-service textile company focused on the denim Industry under Andrew’s guidance. He created the Kingpins Show in 2004 which was the first denim and jeans supply chain event in the industry.  The show now hosts editions in New York, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and China. Two new initiatives came as a result of Covid-19, which are Kingpins 24 an online digital platform and Kingpins Exchange, a digital textile marketplace.

Transformers Foundation, a nonprofit entity is a life ambition of Andrews.  This started in 2020 and is committed to creating, implementing and sharing the changes that need to happen in the jeans industry.

Candiani Denim

Alberto Candiani is the personification of „blue-blooded.“ From his birth, Alberto was surrounded by the world of denim production. He spent most of his childhood using his family’s mill as his very own playground. As he grew, Alberto was guided by his father Gianluigi and Grandfather Primo, who taught him the importance of denim heritage and respecting the environment that surrounds Candiani.

Now, Alberto has settled into his role at the helm of Candiani Denim. Following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Alberto has mastered the art of crafting premium denim. He is committed to being a leader in the industry’s sustainable revolution and carrying on his family’s legacy through sustainable and circular innovation and his vision for the future of denim.

Some of Alberto’s most recent accomplishments include the launch of Coreva, the world’s first biodegradable and compostable stretch denim, winner of Draper’s Sustainable Textile Award and Positive Luxury Innovation of the Year Award, and the recent opening of Candiani’s first denim specialty store with a Made-to-Measure custom service and denim innovation exposition space in Milan.
