Cotton, the fabric of our lives.
Cotton touches us every day, it is a source of livelihoods for millions of smallholders and labourers, including women and their families, and contributes significantly to the economies of many developing countries.
The World Cotton Day is an excellent opportunity to renew our commitment to enhancing the sustainability of the cotton sector and bring it to the forefront of the global agenda.
The main FAO event, to be opened by FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, will highlight the crucial role the cotton sector plays for Members as well as its broader economic and social relevance around the world. The event will be an occasion to focus on the importance of the cotton sector for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Discover Natural Fibres Initiative itself was created in January 2010 as an outgrowth of the International Year of Natural Fibres 2009, declared by the United Nations General Assembly. DNFI serves as a platform for information exchange, including statistics on fibre production and use, and by raising awareness of the benefits of natural fibre industries to the world economy, to the environment and all consumers. DNFI is recognized by the FAO and listed on their website as a Natural Fibres Advisor and nurtures future collaborations and projects between natural fibre organizations.
