(Updated: January 31, 2025)

DNFI 2025 Steering Committee MinutesAs at every DNFI annual meeting, the members of the various natural fibre associations are invited to present an update on the current state of their respective markets.

The world natural fibre production in 2024 is estimated at 32.3 million tonnes, an increase of 800,000 tonnes from 2023. Cotton production is estimated in 2024 at 25.6 million tonnes, jute at 2.8 million, coir and wool at more than one million each, and all other natural fibres combined total 1.7 million tonnes. Natural fibres accounted for 28% of world fibre production in 2023.

The value of world natural fibre production at the farm level fell to US$48 billion in 2024, down from a record (in nominal terms) of $75 billion in 2021 during Covid-era disruptions to world trade. The value of production averaged $54 billion over the last decade. In 2024, cotton production at the farm level was valued at $37 billion, wool, silk and luxury animal fibres totaled $7 billion, jute, kenaf and allied fibres about $2 billion, and all other fibres together were valued at $2 billion.

As of 2024, more than 40 million households were involved in producing natural fibres, including 24 million involved in cotton production, 7 million raising sheep, silkworms and luxury animals for fibre, about 10 million producing jute and allied fibres and another 2 million producing hemp, flax, sisal, and other vegetable fibres. When seasonal work is taken into account, the total annual participation in natural fibre production is between 150 million and 200 million people, or 2-3% of the world’s population.
