DNFI World Natural Fibre Update August 2024

DNFI World Natural Fibre Update Depending on the continent and climate zone, natural fibers grow all year round. The dependence on local and global weather influences changes the quality and quantity of the fibers at the time of harvest or during and after cleaning and processing.

Geopolitical or regional events are other factors affecting the availability of natural fibers. In the case of statistical evaluations, it must be taken into account that some regional harvest periods also take place at the turn of the year.

World natural fibre production in 2024 is estimated at 32.6 million metric tonnes, including 26.2 million tonnes of cotton, 2.6 million tonnes of jute, 1.2 million tonnes of coir, 1 million tonnes of wool and 1.6 million tonnes of all other fibres combined. If realized, production in 2024 will be about one million tonnes higher than in 2023 and the highest in five seasons. The record for world natural fibre production is 35 million tonnes in 2011.

Projections for jute production in India and Bangladesh and sisal production in Brazil are deteriorating, and the estimate of world production of natural fibres in 2024 has been reduced by about 300,000 tonnes from the estimate a month ago.

Prices of commodities rose in 2022, declined during 2023, and were generally stable in the first two quarters of 2024. The World Bank indexes of Energy, Agriculture, and Fertilizer prices (2010=100) spiked in 2022, and they remained above pre-Covid levels in Q1 and Q2 2024. Within the Agricultural category, Other Raw Materials (cotton, natural rubber and tobacco) have been relatively stable during 2024. The only commodity category to exhibit consistently rising prices in recent years is Precious Metals.
