Depending on the continent and climate zone, natural fibers grow all year round. The dependence on local and global weather influences changes the quality and quantity of the fibers at the time of harvest or during and after cleaning and processing.
Geopolitical or regional events are other factors affecting the availability of natural fibers. In the case of statistical evaluations, it must be taken into account that some regional harvest periods also take place at the turn of the year.
Natural Fibre Production estimated at 31.9 million tonnes in 2024, an increase of 400,000 tonnes from 2023. The December estimate by DNFI is up 200,000 tonnes from November because of an increased estimate of jute production in India.
President-elect Trump has indicated that he will impose higher tariffs on all imports from Canada, China and Mexico, who will almost surely reciprocate by imposing higher tariffs on imports from the United States, presumably including imports of US cotton. The cotton textile industry of Canada is insignificant. However, over the three most recent seasons, China accounted for 34% of US cotton exports and Mexico 5%. However, cotton exports from the Southern Hemisphere are rising, resulting in strong competition for the United States. Fifteen years ago, cotton exports from the Southern Hemisphere averaged about 2 million tones, or about 10% of world exports. In the current season, exports from the Southern Hemisphere are estimated at 4 million tonnes, 45% of the world total.
