DNFI World Natural Fibre Update June 2024

DNFI World Natural Fibre Update Depending on the continent and climate zone, natural fibers grow all year round. The dependence on local and global weather influences changes the quality and quantity of the fibers at the time of harvest or during and after cleaning and processing.

Geopolitical or regional events are other factors affecting the availability of natural fibers. In the case of statistical evaluations, it must be taken into account that some regional harvest periods also take place at the turn of the year.

World natural fibre production in 2024 is estimated at 32.7 million metric tons, including 25.9 million tonnes of cotton, 2.9 million tonnes of jute, 1.2 million tonnes of coir, 1 million tonnes of wool and 1.6 million tonnes of all other fibres combined. If realized, production in 2024 will be one million tonnes higher than in 2023 and the highest since 2017. The record for world natural fibre production is 35 million tonnes in 2011.

The first estimate by USDA of 2024/25 global cotton production was released in May. The estimate is nearly 5% higher than production in 2023/24. USDA is forecasting that 20% of 2024 world cotton production will occur in the Southern Hemisphere, one of the highest proportions ever. Brazil overtook the United States as the third largest producing country in 2023/24, and production in Brazil is forecast to rise by 500,000 tonnes to reach a record 3.6 million tonnes in 2024/25.
